What a busy month!
If you've been past Cockenzie Harbour during April, you might have seen signs of our activities - a couple of weeks ago we opened two test trenches to pick up the alignments of the two harbour sidings which formed the terminus of the Cadell's iron railway.
We were successful in pinpointing our trenches and discovered in situ sleepers, fixings and iron chairs. Two of the chairs have been removed for preservation and will be cleaned ready for display in our forthcoming waggonway exhibition, which will be created over the coming months. But don't worry, we've only just scratched the surface and we are confident that there will be loads more to find in September for our community archeaology event - The Cockenzie Big Dig!
Details of how to get involved in the Big Dig will be released soon, but you will be aware that our JustGiving crowdfunding page has been running for the past 30 days and we're deligthed to confirm that the total raised in that period was £770.00!!
That, in addition to other donations and our first members subscriptions means that we have a really healthy fund with which to put together a fantastic community dig, complete with family friendly archaeology activities, storytelling and living history salt making.
So thanks to all those who donated, but if you missed the window of opportunity, don't worry - if you'd like to donate or become a member, please contact us at 1722waggonwayheritagegroup@gmail.com
